Um novo material feito de madeira é a promessa para o presente na tecnologia de materiais. Trata-se da nanocelulose cristalina. O novo material é leve, forte, e conduz eletricidade. O que é mais, tem sido em torno de um longo, longo tempo.
A nanocelulose cristalina (NCC) é produzida pelo processamento da celulose de madeira, e já é considerada por cientistas a mais recente maravilha entre os materiais modernos.
A Pioneer Electronics pretende aplicar o material já na próxima geração de displays flexíveis eletrônicos. A IBM está usando-o para criar componentes de computadores, mesmo o exército americano está utilizando para fazer uma armadura corporal leve.
Segundo a revista New Scientist, para aumentar a produção, os EUA abriram sua primeira fábrica de nanocelulose em Madison, Wisconsin, em 26 de julho. A National Science Foundation acredita que o mercado vai se tornar umaindústria de US$ 600 bilhões em 2020.
Os novos cristais de celulose tem uma relação resistência-peso oito vezes maior que o aço inoxidável, e é incrivelmente barato. O material é extraído por um processamento da polpa de madeira, resultando em cristais minúsculos – em grande quantidade, esses cristais de nanocelulose parecem-se com neve.
“É a versão natural renovável de um nanotubo de carbono, por uma fração do preço”, diz Jeff Youngblood do Instituto Nanoflorestal da Universidade Purdue, de Indiana (EUA).
O cientista afirma que a nova tecnologia pode ser uma revolução nos preços de mercado e na sustentabilidade. “Nós não temos sequer que utilizar árvores inteiras. Se quiséssemos, poderíamos usar ramos e galhos, ou até mesmo serragem. Estamos transformando lixo em ouro…”
A expectativa no exterior, é que a NCC substitua o metal e peças plásticas dos carros, e poderia fazer plásticos não-orgânicos em um futuro não muito distante, disse Phil Jones, diretor de novos empreendimentos e tecnologias disruptivas da IMERYS, empresa de processamento. “Qualquer um que faz um carro ou um saco plástico vai querer entrar nessa”, diz ele.
